Delhi Rain: IMD predicts more showers and breaks decades-old records
New Delhi is still dealing with the unrelenting rain that started Friday morning. This has caused widespread flooding, road disruptions, and significant drops in temperature across New Delhi and its surrounding areas. The India Meteorological Department has issued a Yellow Alert, warning that rain will continue to fall in Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram, as well as other parts of the National Capital Region.
IMD’s forecast for Saturday predicts cloudy skies, intermittent rain, and thundershowers on the morning of Saturday. By evening, it could be foggy or even smoggy. The result is a wetter-than-usual December. This pattern was created by an active west disturbance interfacing with an easterly wind.
Delhi’s wettest December for 27 years
Delhi has experienced unusually wet weather in December despite its usual dryness. Safdarjung’s main weather observatory recorded 30.2mm in only nine hours of Friday rain, making it the wettest December day in the last five years. Delhi University recorded 39mm of rain, Lodhi Road 34.2mm, and Pusa 35mm in the same period.
IMD spokespeople say that December totaled 42.8mm of rainfall, which makes it the wettest month since records began and also the rainiest since 1997.
Capital Impact
The heavy rains have disrupted the daily lives of Delhiites. There are reports from various city areas that there is severe flooding. Delhiites are facing a number of challenges as they try to get out in the rain.
The IMD warns that despite the bad weather conditions, drizzle and fog will persist through the weekend. Residents are advised to use caution while traveling.
